Old Newspapers
The British Newspaper Archive is a wonderful resource for reading old British Newspapers, where you may find stories about your ancestors. You also have access to this if you have a Find My Past or Genes Reunited account (but I prefer the search facilities on the British Newspaper Archive site).

The Times Digital Archive has access to the full text of the Times newspaper from 1785 to 1985. It’s available via Gale free of charge through many public libraries

The Welsh Newspaper Archives, from the National Library of Wales, has 15 million articles (many of which relate to subjects in the rest of the UK) and is free to search.

Old maps
Old Maps can give an incite into areas where your ancestors lived.
Cheshire Archives have put Cheshire Tithe Maps online, which even show land owners:

The National Library of Scotland has larger scale Ordnance Survey maps 1842-1952 covering all of Great Britain:
